Painting A Shed

Just painting an 8 x 6 new shed. One side will be against a wall and therefore not be seen. However, i don't want to be throwing cuprinol garden shades at this side at £23 a tin.

is there any cheaper alternative i can paint it with just to give it a bit of protection ? masonary paint ? ordinary emulsion ?

I would be tempted to use a high quality preservative on that side as you wont be able to treat it again without major upheaval I imagine.

you can use old engine oil if you won't see it

I will leave enough room to get my arm and a long handled roller down for future maintenance.

I was going to suggest old oil myself, but if it's a new shed it will have some sort of protection already in the wood so oil wont soak in very well, I found that out the hard way.

Works fine on older dryer wood.

Car underseal would also do it and probably last forever.

As it's out of the weather especially the sun, I'd prime, undercoat & gloss it with some old paint you have lying around

Beware of false economy. I'd go for Butinox No 1 solvent-based wood stain. Costs a lot, but will last far, far, longer than most other products. Brother-in-law did his new wooden garage over 8 years ago, and it still looks like new.
