what is a continental breakfast ?

I have my own ideas as to what you should find in a continental breakfast at a hotel. BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK ? WHAT IS THE MINIMUM YOU WOULD ACCEPT ? - cup of tea & piece of toast ?

ARE THERE ANY MINIMUM STANDARDS OR QUANTITIES FOR THIS ?

Coffee, juice, croissant and probably some jams i guess.

In an American motel - half a muffin and some orange juice and coffee. Soon learnt to go for a more expensive but higher quality motel.

From an American. A continental breakfast should include all the basic breakfast foods, but if verys depending on the quality of the Hotel or Inn. It should include, eggs, bacon, sausage, boxed cereal, several types of muffins, a few different juices, milk, and of course coffee.

The minimum is coffee, milk, juice, boxed cereal, and a bagel.

Stayed in an American motel in Washington D.C.offering 'continental breakfast' which turned out to be a doughnut and a coffee. Would have thought generally that food offered is not hot.

I don't think there are any minimum standards although it should match any description given by the hotel. Last October I stayed in a cheap hotel in Amsterdam. The breakfast included in the price and served to the table was:- orange juice, bread with ham and cheese, croissant with jams and spreads, hard boiled egg and coffee. Fine by me.

Minimum in US - coffee and donut. If the donuts haven't run out.

Minimum elsewhere - bread of some sort, butter, jam, coffee or maybe tea.

Continental generally implies cold (except the coffee - and not always then). If you are offered cooked items it's turning into a breakfast buffet.

There aren't any minimum standards/quantities - it's up to the hotel owner to offer what he wants/thinks his guests will want.
