Now you'll have thousands of kids playing up doing nothing then hoping to "get lucky" when they leave. Nice one Cowell, underminded the education system in 5 minutes, genius!

Clearly not meant seriously, and very British. We prefer to dismiss our achievements as though they just happened, we were lucky, we were in the right place. To do otherwise would be seen as being boastful or immodest by other Britons. To say "I got very rich because I am a genius in business", or anything like it, would not be received well. Americans and others tend strongly to the opposite way, and saying "I got lucky" would be seen as sheer dishonesty and suspect.
I could work hard 24 hours a day and not be a Simon Cowell or a Richard Branson or Philip Green, because they have a talent which I don't have. Few have it. Those who do , can start with nothing and become rich and they have no fear that they will go bust, because they know that they can do it all again, if the worst happens.

Totally disagree with Andy's comment:
......but it is circumstances which fall the right way at the right time for them, that allow them to pursue their career path.
In my experience, entrepreneurs make their own circumstances by bulldoze ring their way through what 'ordinary' people see as obstacles and an ability to think outside the box.
