Where Was I ?

Where was I?
I think I have ten of eleven letters obtained from clues of various locations mainly around Oxfordshire.
With the eleven letters one has to work out the rearrangement to reveal both a small town and the surname of a penitent slave trader, who by good grace, is associated with it. There's a museum dedicated to him, and to a poet?
The letters I have are:- ELOHTNTNEO-.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated.
Newton has been in my thinking as a name and Stowe but I accept I don't have the letters for the latter!
