I have just moved into a house. The previous owner had a dog. The kitchen still has a sickly dog fir/a dog was here smell - but not elsewhere in the house. The kitchen has been cleaned all over but still persists. Any special technique/chemicals etc to get rid of it. Oddly enough my cat doesnt seem disturbed by it.

Try Neutradol - but make sure there's not dog wee under the lino (that's what I found).
I would get a professional deep cleaner company in as it sounds that no amount of cleaning wont touch it, no point using an air freshener to mask it.
I had a strong dog smell in my kitchen after I had let it out. When I took off the kick boards under the units there was dog hair trapped there.
Baking soda and apple cider vinigar might do the trick. Have a look on google for what mix you will need.
It is absolutely astonishing how many/most people with an animal in their dwelling choose to, not only let them but, by preference keep them in the one room they should never be allowed to enter. Like those who know and take seriously the implications of Toxocara Canis (which is endemic in many countries, not least the UK) I would not knowingly share living quarters with a dog. My suggestion would be to acquaint yourself with the risks and then have the place (the whole house) cleaned to a similar level as a hospital isolation ward between occupants - and make sure it really is done. I would not consider moving into a house with a history of dog presence until that was done.

According to karl all the dog lovers on here haven't got long to live!
Well said, grumpy!
Not sure I would want to live in a sterile home Karl. Have picked up infection from far more humans, in fact, just the one infection from a cat, when I picked him up thinking he was mine, and he objected and bit.
Never had one from any dogs I have had.
KARL - I bet you're fun to have around !!
I personally would rather share my home with a dog than most people.
Can't answer this as I wouldn't know what a house without a dog should smell like. Now off to bed with my six dogs. Karl, I feel so sad for you.
snargmcnarf - Industrial steam clean. I dont know what to suggest otherwise unless it is coming from under flooring (as mentioned) in which case you will need to deal. Refreshing the paintwork can leave a good smell after cleaning and may just get rid of any lingering dog odour.
Or you could get a dog then you wouldn't notice the smell was any different.
Dogs don't scatter dirty clothes on the floor and can even be trained to put them in the washing machine.
Try sprinkling bicarbonate soda all over the floor, leave overnight then Hoover up.
I'd rather have a shorter life that involved the love and loyalty of a dog(and a cat in my experience)than a long life without the joy a pet can bring. All animals kept as pets(except maybe goldfish)cause some kind of smell but in my experience its all worth it.Maybe try asking advice from a vet as they know the biology of dogs and their smells
If the kitchen has been properly cleaned, and the smell isnt anywhere else in the house, have you checked the drains?

To KARL, my doggies smell fresher and nicer than some humans and probably carry less germs too!
Just to invite further bile from some people I will mention that the mother of my grandson has started suffering epileptic fits. She has four dogs which have free reign of the house. Two were acquired recently as puppies and relieve themselves on the floor and I saw one lick the teat on the one month old infant's bottle. One of the symptoms of toxocariasis is epileptic fits - I feel sorry for the prospects of the child even though others may applaud the conditions he is being brought up in ("fun " ?). She and I get on well because she is otherwise a nice person and she knows that while I think dogs are pleasant animals I do not want to have them all over me or my food, etc. Each to his own I say, without pouring vitriol onto those who don't share my views or preferences.
