Have seen them in the Fruit section of my local supermarket, how do you prepare and eat them? What do they taste like?.

Make sure they are very ripe before eating...otherwise it's like a mouthful of alum ie a horrible drying sensation. But , don't let that put you off....if very ripe they are good.
I eat Sharon fruit which I believe is a seedless Persimmons. I just eat them like an apple. They are very sweet and lovely.
I was going to say what gingejbee said - they taste woody if not fully ripe. I took that bit out of my post because I worded it badly and it made them sound horrible.
Re wolf: yes, my local market has Sharon fruit ...which is a variety of persimmon.

Thanks, I might go for it next time I see them for sale.
If you don't like the first one you buy don't give up, it is a bit of a lottery finding a nice ripe one.
Have just had some superb ones from lidl. The only sweet variety of persimmon used to be a sharon fruit but now here seem to be more varieties and they are sold as persimmons. The "new" kind can be eaten when they are hard or soft, the only thing to be careful of is the skin which can be a bit tough and indigestible.
They were selling Sharon fruit in Tesco this morning - i didn't buy one because I didn't know what to do with it. I might try one, next time.
I've been buying Persimmons recently. The large ones from Tesco. They're lovely eaten as Wolf says like an apple. Tesco also do a prepared fruit salad with mango and persimmon which will be ripe.
