Why do UK passports have the field i.e. "Name / Nom" in both English and French?

Probably a hangover from the past - French was once the international diplomatic language.


You'll find more languages at the front of the passport BTW.

The passport has to make sense to border officials throughout the world. In most parts of the world the local officials will have at least a basic grasp of English but in some countries, particularly in Africa, French is far more widely understood.
