Neutering

I have a Yorkshire Terrier, nearly 4, he is a beautiful pet but he marks his territory quite often - usually when our 7 year old cat is at home. He should be used to the cat as he has always been around but he seems jealous. He still acts like a puppy, wanting attention and playtime a lot, which we love, but the peeing is getting me down as I dont know what to do about it.

Would neutering make any difference? I have heard it calms dogs down and stops them peeing. How much does neutering cost - we are in Merseyside.

Neutering may or may not help. The marking will have started as a result of hormonal changes when he was 'growing up', and from that point of view it may seem that neutering will help. But often by this age you will find that his behaviour has become a habit, and so removing the hormonal stimulus isn't always a quick fix.

In short, it's definitely worth a try but don't expect miracles. Cost can be very variable depending on the drugs used and the weight of your dog. Anything between �50 and �100 I would think - ring your vet for a quote.

I also have a yorkie he's a miniature (very miniature) he's just turned 5 and he does the same thing,pees all the time,if he's out he has to stop at every lampost,every wall and every blade of grass and indoors i have to constently walk round with disinfectant in my hand according to a friend of ours who breeds yorkies the boys are pretty well known for it,Also another friend had a jack russell done the same thing indoors she got him done and its a lot better so perhaps it should be considered!

like Eels says it may or may not, but it will cut the Urge back, but the habit remains that is what you have to TRAIN, If the dog goes in your home it's YOUR fault not theirs you have to train them ,it's not a BREED trait it is a dog trait, male or females can mark territory, so what they are doing is saying they are boss, the top dog.Why would you LET them mark your home? SUPERVISION and tell them no and take them out everytime they do it or try to do it, KEEP doing it, don't let them do it. Neutering will cut back allot of the urge, from hormones. But clean all spots with a enzyme cleaner to take the smell out. When out walking why do you stop to let them mark? Keep walking.. say "let's go" and keep walking I don't think he can stop, smell, get into position then lift and go if you walk.. he'll be hard pressed to keep up and do all this...If he needs to pee let him, but marking is not needed, only if you let them. Sorry this is one that is just driving me nuts, I had 10 people ask me this very thing today, from an owner of a chihuahua, yorkie and a terrier mix, to a great dane. And the one with the Yorkie had the dog with her, and it tried to pee on my post at work, I went AHH! and walked towards him and said NO, he stopped with leg cocked and put his leg back down and looked sheepish.. I said take him to go pee, and then come back and see me.
