It was Mr P's uncle's 60th last week. We gave him a bottle of whisky.

His daughter was visiting today and said that her father's drinking has become more serious and he is (although he won't admit it) an alcoholic.

I am now kicking myself for giving him booze.

Alcoholics are secretive so how were you to know? Don`t beat yourself up about it.
Well it's not like you knowingly did it so don't worry about it, there's nowt you can do anyway.
Oh dear, but you had good intentions xx

My own dad was an alcoholic, I really feel for his family (and him) going through this.

I always knew he liked a drink, it's legendary in the family but I hadn't realised it had become such a problem.
No point feeling upset, it was a kind gesture made in good faith and if you hadn't given him that bottle he would just have bought one anyway.
Worry for him not yourself.
Oh dear - but it was one bottle, and you didn't know. Don't blame yourselves.
It's not your fault at all. He would get it from somewhere anyway and you obviously didn't know. I hope he is getting some help, if he wants it.
I'm sure that wasn't the only source of booze he had, if he's not drinking the one you gave him he'd have something else. Don't worry about it, still a nice thought

Thank you all, you're very kind to me.

I just feel a bit stupid not figuring out that he might have a problem. I've seen it in my own family, can't believe I didn't realise it was going on in theirs.

I'll be a bit more careful about buying booze as a present in future.
Well, at least he would have been pleased with it..
Forget it.........you think that you have changed his prognosis by giving him a bottle of whisky a week ago?

Nonsense....enjoy your day.

I know I've not turned him into an alcoholic by giving him a bottle of whisky, it's just that I really would have been hard pushed to give him a more inappropriate gift!

I'll move on from it though, not worry about it too much. I know my one bottle probably wasn't the only one he was given or the last one he will drink.
Quite right too, 2sp. Glad you can see things for what they are worth. Socks for Christmas? ;)
