The ban is usually extended if the appeal is deemed to be frivolous (Roy Keane on Alf-Inge Haaland, for example).

Wilshere wasn't appealing, he got a two-match ban after he admitted a misconduct charge over an offensive hand gesture.

Sorry to contradict you jomlett but and I quote “an independent regulatory commission refused his appeal after a hearing on thursday “ checked in case I was going mad!
I'm sorry, but I thought he hadn't faced an appeal to have his ban extended; I thought he's only been refused the chance to appeal.

Interesting how some top footballers manage to get xmas/new year BREAKS!
Wrong North London club?? I doubt if Barnet could afford his wages :-)
Glad spurs can't or won't enough prima about there
He admitted the offence, but he appealed the length of the ban.

He is allowed to appeal the length of the ban without incurring any extra punishment. If he had not admitted the offence and had appealed the decision (and lost his appeal) he would have got extra match ban.
