Ostentation... I'm sure that's it. Branding, designer labels, all that. All I want is something to tell me the time (I believe many people use their phones for this and some today don't have watches at all).

I bought my watch when I sold my house and made a killing just before the market crashed. I had been skint all my days, scrimping and saving to pay the mortgage and bills.

I felt I had earned a treat, and had always wanted a Tag. Most of my friends think it's a fake as I'm really not flashy in any way. I have never bothered to correct them. I didn't buy it to impress anyone else, I bought it as a reminder to myself that I had finally got on my feet financially.

I still look at it with a sense of pride.

I was given a gold Tissot watch for my 21st. Had it overhauled recently which cost me £75 - probably more than it cost all those years ago.

Just revisiting this thread and saw that jake-the-peg said "I believe Rolex makes more watches a year than Patek Phillipe has made in its entire history!" Isn't that like saying that Ford has made more cars than what Rolls Royce has made?
