Has anyone out there experienced feeling happier when they do not watch, listen or read the stories that are happening in the UK or around the world? Has anyone gone for weeks, months or years without following news events?

I used to devour newspapers and T:V .news but I don't bother anymore .It's all doom and gloom and quite frankly some of the things I read in the papers make my blood boil. I have a swift rake through the BBC on line everyday but only look at things which I think could be of interest to me.I buy one paper a week now and a weekly local paper. I buy a broadsheet at the weekend but mainly for the crossword .They rehash everything that's been published during the week anyway.

I never buy a newspaper, but read one when I'm in work. So when I'm lucky enough to have a few weeks off, I tend to miss a lot of news. One that sticks out happened in 2004. I had arranged to pick up my father to go for a drink on the afternoon of 28th December. He takes a daily paper and regularly watches TV news. When I picked him up, we exchanged the usual pleasantries and he told me that there was now an estimated 100,000 dead. My first thought was, oh my god, what have the ragheads done now. I assumed that there had been some huge terrorist attack. It was of course the tsunami of which I had been oblivious for two and a half days.
I hate watching regional news. Living in the East Midlands I just hate watching Central News or East Midlands Today in case the programmes feature a murder, robbery or burglary that took place yards from where I live.
Fortunately I have Sky Digital and can watch different regions of ITV and BBC programmes. Of course I don't have this problem if I watch Meridian Tonight, BBC London News, Granada Reports or Look East for obvious reasons...
