I get the impresion that eastern europeans smoke a lot - they always have a fag in their mouth .

Is it an incorrect observation ?

possibly, in eastern europe cigarettes cost up to 2 euros a pack so its an affordable habit

Certainly a more commonplace practice than here, at least in countries such as Poland, Latvia, USSR, Bulgaria, Romania etc.
