is it illegal to buy cigarettes and tobacco off the internet as i have just found a site that is selling them cheap and i thought their was somthing in the news recently that ruled against this or is it ok to go ahead with the purchase.

It is not illegal, but if they are purchased from outside the country where you live then you will have to pya local taxes and duties on importing them.

Then it is clearly illegal - that is a false declaration, as they are not a gift.

The customs people aren't entirely stupid.

it is true that overseas items sent as a gift are tax free,but ask yourself,would the customs think they were a gift,i doubt it.

I'd google the name of the company to see if it's a scam as well. Don't forget, if it seems too good to be true,then it probably is. Or something like that.

If you travel to another EU country you can purchaes cigarettes for your own use without restriction and without paying UK taxes when you return....but they HAVE to be for your own use (or immediate family). HMC&E have decided that a "reasonable quantity for your own use" would be approx 3000 cigarettes.

It has recently been argued in EU courts that this should also be applied to cigarettes purchased mail order or on line from another EU country but it seems this has failed.
