today it took me 20 attempts and a reboot to get online- why does this happen? (about once a week) it seems inexplicable as an hour or so earlier it was working fine

Sounds like your ISP may be oversubscribed and does not have sufficient IP addresses. You keep rebooting to get one and can't get online until one becomes free.

Does this happen at certain times of the day ?
