does anyone know how I can stop my 12 week old pup from pooing in the kitchen over night? she goes out regularley and last thing at night, weve even stopped feeding her a good few hours before she settles down but this morning we got up and she done 3!! All on the paper though which is good!

When ours was younger we couldn't feed her after 4pm at the latest cos she would do the same thing as yours and we would put her out every 20 minutes if we had too,she would hold on & on & on,she wouldn't do it,even now she is put out for last time at midnight,though she's done nothing now for months & months.Do you use a word when she goes?ie;When ours go out we tell her "Wee wee" so she goes and "po po" for the other.If you say the word whenever you see her go she should associate it with going outside,if you can follow what i'm on about,not very good at typing whats in my head!

A 12 week old pup can not prevent it. Be patient and do not scold her for it. Always praise her for having a successful private moment outside. Eventually she will gain better control.

I used Major when my dog was a puppy. John M was pm at the time and full of it!

Yes, you need to encourage her. When she looks as if she's going to do something during the day say 'major' or whatever and then praise her when done. Then you can try to encourage her to do it on command, and she will learn. Trouble is, not all dogs like going in the dark

Do you leave a light on at all? We are new owners of a whippet pup. Being new to this, we thought it better to leave a light on at night (yes, we now know it was a stupid thing to do). Could almost guarantee a parcel. Turned the light off and nothing.

I don't sleep well and sometimes spend the night downstairs. If I have a light on, the pup will wake and do her stuff. If I leave the light off, she will sleep right through.

weve stopped leaving the light on for her now, and she did only do 1 last night but we also didnt feed her after 6 so I think this may be working, thanks for all your sdvice everyone

I disagree totally with not feeding a puppy after 4 pm - a young puppy needs regular meals spread out and last thing at night needs a milky meal to help it sleep and go through the night without being hungry. It will gradually be able to have fewer meals, but it is better to cut out a daytime one and spread the others out.

You need to take it out regularly and last thing at night - and stay out with it until it has done something - and get up early in the morning to catch it before it needs to go. If you do this regularly then the pup will know it is going to be let out and will wait until you take it out, although on the odd occasion it may not be able to wait and you must not blame the pup, just get up earlier!

As meltoadhall said, invest in a puppy crate and put newspaper or puppy pads in one end, and the pup will soon get used to not messing in its bed.

Puppies need to be trained to be clean, it doesn't just happen overnight, like human babies need to be potty trained.

can I just say lankeela that we actually do feed our puppie after 4 but we have started feeding her no later than 6 or 7. she then settles down about 10.30 ish AFTER going out and we are up with her about 6-6.30. In my view this is not getting up late! she never messes in her bed, just on the kitchen tiles and more often than not it is on the numerous pieces of newspaper that we put down for her, cant understand why your reply was hinting at the fact that we are not doing the right thing by our puppie, have you yourself never needed advice on anything? Maybe in your wisdom you could advise me how to stop her shredding her paper that we put down for her (maybe there is no advise on this, maybe its just something she will learn as she gets older)
