Could the authorities not take this money from him and put it towards the cost of keeping him in jail?

I think it's a disgrace - bullet behind the lug would be better imo.

That would be a very good compromise, sandy.
There's an old saying that you can judge the morals of a country by the way it treats its prisoners. That, by the way, puts the USA rather a long way down ...

But if we in the UK commit such an evil man to prison, we shouldn't then negligently allow other inmates to rough him up. So the award is because he wasn't as protected as he should have been.
