Hello.Since talking to all you very helpful people,re wifi/wired conns, I have now upgradet my EE contract and everything seems to be working perfectly.My new router arrived and was connected up as per instructions and voila! everything is working well.After all this flannel my question is would it be better to leave my router switched on and so leave wifi active permantelly or is it better to close it down when not in use? thanks for all your help.

Further, the exchange communicates with your router periodically (even if you're not online) so that the download speed can be optimised for your phone line. If your router is switched off the exchange registers a (non-existent) fault and drops the speed available to your line in order to compensate for it. So turning your router off is likely to reduce the download speeds you can get when it's switched on.

You've probably never achieved the maximum to start with, Canary42. It takes 10 days to a fortnight from installation (with the router being permanently switched on) for the exchange system to gradually bring the line speed to its maximum.
