I have a nephew mad keen on all things Titanic and tho' I took him to a Titanic exhibition in Southampton some time ago he could not find this out. (I hope he isn't planning on trying to call 'em up....the little ghoul...)

the radio operator on the titanic would have alternated the marconi radio distress signal CDQ with the new SOS signal which was brought in in 1912.he will have also added titanics call sign of MGY.all in morse code of course but as the nearest radio operator on board the californian was copping a few zzzzs he might as well of wrote them a letter.

While agreeing for the most part with dilf re the Titanic's call sign and the distress call(s) it used, I have to pull him up on the statement that the SOS signal was introduced in 1912.

"The 'SOS' signal was established as an International Distress Signal by an agreement made between the British Marconi Society and the German Telefunk organisation at the Berlin Radio Conference, 3 October 1906. The signal was formally introduced on 1 July 1908.

The first time the 'SOS' signal was used in an emergency was on 10 June 1909, when the Cunard liner SS Slavonia was wrecked off the Azores. Two steamers received her signals and went to the rescue.

This was nearly three years before the Titanic made her famous signal!
