That was quite a work-out. I admit to firing up the spreadsheet to help with the sorting, and once I'd got the theme and saw what had to be revealed I left a few loose ends till this morning. Some beautifully hidden misprints and, for me at least, a few red herrings. Thanks, Homer, for a great puzzle and for reminding me of some happy evenings.

Excellent puzzle. A theme familiar to us for two reasons.
Having crawled over the line I find that the number of manipulations specified seems to be an underestimate. And are there not one or two ambiguities as to the highlighting towards the bottom?
What ghastly memories the theme brings back!
I had the same problems, contendo, until I realised that there was nothing for it but to carry out the manipulation. The number problem is easy to resolve if you think symmetrically and keep in mind the technical requirement implied in the second instruction.

As for the ambiguities, they're resolved too - I hope. (Symmetry comes in handy again here, but if you were to ignore it there is still a visible alternative. Will that be allowed, I wonder?)

There seems to be a more-than-randomly probable number of us for whom discovery of the theme led to an immediate hunch about the chosen words!

Sorry, I now realise my mistake: There Is No (visible) Alternative if you carry out the second instruction precisely in the manner intended! Once I cottoned on to the degree of dexterity required, all my reservations evaporated. Fussy and fiddly perhaps, but a brilliant construction nonetheless.
Part of my Listener 'tool kit' along with coloured pencils, highlighters, etc. is a large squared (10mm) exercise book which was particularly useful here. I wouldn't have been able to have done anything useful with the printed grid.
Finished. Very clever - including side columns.
Oh yes - so it does - I'd missed that - thanks IainGrace
