Decided to have a clear out of kitchen cupboards and guess what was lurking in the dark recesses? Packet of noodles - best by date 2006; baking powder - best by date 2010, macaroni - best by date 2011 and garlic puree - best by date 2010. And to think I prided myself on not wasting food!

When I was house hunting in the mid sixties I viewed a house that had a larder, it was filled right up with tins stacked on shelves and the floor, almost reaching the door. I asked what it was in aid of, the reply was they stockpiled for the war and never bothered to use it in case they needed it one day.

And of those the only one which is likely to be not fit for purpose after the date is the baking powder. I rarely look at sell by dates on store cupboard products.
