If you have any heathland in your region, thats probably the best place to start looking. They like to warm up in the morning sun, so a south facing aspect and you might be lucky to see one basking, although they are hard to spot, as they can sense anyone approaching from way off.
I've only seen one grass snake so far.

Sorry about the above..My sister had one in her garden sunbathing last weekend...the snake that is not my sister.

She was scared of it and her husband got it on a stick and popped it into some long grass across the road.
