A friend in her mid fifties has for the last few months been waking up every hour through the night. She is ( as far as we know) fit and healthy, but this waking through the night is beginning to take its toll.

Try Nytol. You can buy it over the counter.
Persuade her to see a doctor but don't take sleeping pills unless absolutely necessary. They are addictive and only help in the short term.
before using OTC, I'd pop to the doc and check for any underlying issue. I know its what everyone says but it could be hormonal? Along with the flushes etcet etcet, it has given me phases of not sleeping
Nytol gives me hell's own restless legs - I have used Kalms with better effect. I also find a good solution is a half of one of those tiny one-a-day antihistamine / hayfever tablets. Even the ones that claim to not make you drowsy knock me sideways during the day, but as a little aid to a full interrupted night's sleep they are brilliant.
There are herbal remedies

- isnt it Valerian ?

one of my releatives swore by a brand called Evening Thunder,
and we all called it Evening Chunder....

Antihistamines as suggested above are mild and I am pretty sure not addictive.
Could be as simple as eating to late at night
I agree with chrissa.....try Nytol for a week or so and if this doesn't solve the problem see you GP.
