http:@

I just accidentally hit the @ key when I was typing out http:// and noticed that it turned into http:// //
So I tried again with http:@. com and it became http:// .com
This worked in Firefox and IE, but I can't see anything about it on Google. Is it a deliberate/longstanding shortcut, or is it just my DNS server correcting what it perceives as a mistake (as indeed it was the first time)?
