For those painters among you - I have just finished caulking the gaps between the skirting board and the wall.
What colour is the caulk normally painted , to match the skirting board (dark wood stain) or wall (lavender) ?

You have to look at the situation and judge which will look best.
In my experience, caulk will never take a stain properly. You'll always see the white through it.
Paint it in with the wall.
In that situation, I agree with TB.
But in any other I paint the caulk as per the skirting board because the gap you have just filled arises because the skirting is unable to be close to the wall as the wall is wavy. The caulk is thus an extension of the skirting not the wall. So painting it as skirting gives a straight horizontal line between contrasting colours.
