Why are hydrangeas different colours? Is it something to do with the type of soil?

Yes - acid soil gives you blue flowers and alkaline pink ones.

And if you want to turn pink ones blue bury nails (hammering ones) around the base and they will turn blue. But be warned if I am right in thinking you cannot turn them back to pink. Another way is to put a iron bar in the ground alongside the plant or a more expensive way is to buy a chemical that does it for you.
