Cut them so that they'll fit comfortably in your burner/stove.
When I buy ready cut kindling it's usually between ½ and 1 inch in thickness and about 8 to 10 inches length!
Under 1" thick and around 6-8" long depending on the size of your fire.
I go for a thick thumb diameter wise and as long as the fire, stove whatever can handle.
As suggested above no definitive answer, whatever is a manageable size for stove etc.

We have a open fire and a log burning stove.

I take it my thickness you mean the width
Yes, but it's really not a precise thing, whatever fits will work.
You have an open fire and a stove but don't know the size of kindling?

Is this a new property?

No specific size really, just cut a few and if it works , Bingo! you done it!

This is for just getting the fire lit I assume?
When I was young we had an open fire. My dad used to bring home fairly large tree trunks which were washed up on the shingle beach near where we lived (long, wide river). They went in to the fire the way they were - the bulk resting on a metal stool. As they burned down they were just shoved further in. Hard up days methinks.
