Lan Card

I've lost my local connection (cable) and have been told that I need to install or reinstall a lan card. Is this a diy job or should I go to PC World ?

I'd start by trying to simply reinstall the network driver. (The necessary file should be available on the website of the firm that manufactured your computer).

If that didn't work I'd be looking for a local computer repair shop to help me. (PC World would probably charge 2 or 3 times what a local guy would).

Wrong!

Derek clearly has access to the internet via a different computer (or he couldn't have posted this question). If he can use that computer to download the driver installation file, all he needs to do is to transfer it (via a USB stick, or similar) to the troublesome computer and then double-click on it to run it.

A lan card is a circuit board inside your computor that is required to access the internet and other computors, ( local Area Network).

It depends on how confident you feel regarding opening up your PC and unplugging & plugging the cards there, and maybe bolting it onto the PC's back. It's not difficult. But the shop is always an alternative.

lan card wont need touching.just either do a system restore which is easiest.or download the driver for lan card and reinstall it.no need to open pc or anything else.

Methyl, I removed some 'unwanted' files/programmes from my XP desktop before attempting to set up my new Windows 7 desktop and tranfer data from old to new, but must have inadvertently removed an essential driver because I then lost my local (Virgin Media Cable) connection to the internet.

After spending 3 hours talking to their help-line techies in India, who took me through the checks you suggested,the problem remained and it was decided it was a lan card/driver issue.

I've now taken the faulty pc to my very good local repairer who has quoted a basic £25 fee. Although I can follow a set of instructions I am not a skilled IT person, so thanks once more.

PS I am using my temperamental laptop at present.
