slappy (slapshot) mentioned this a couple of evenings ago - know the Vatnajokull well and been up there to Bárðarbunga several decades ago now! I went to an interesting lecture on the lessons of the last fallout in Exeter not long ago and that was fascinating, not least I had had my a-rse over a volcano on the Breidamerkerjokull sandur.....(in front of the glacier).

See, the thing is we have never had any of these predictions in the past and we have only had a few incidents. Now, especially since the 'ash cloud' every little tremor makes it into the news. It might mean disaster - but the chances are that it will not. We might be on an Orange warning but nothing has changed.

Not this time 237SJ the Icelandic boys don't raise the alert level without very good cause. EuroVAAC have also met and only in consultation will they raise the alert stage, one of the most successful indicators of eruption, harmonic tremors, have been detected regularly in the last week, these signify significant movement of eruptable magma.....

This is a significant risk.... people will poo-poo this alert at their peril

We flew across there last night. I can tell you that the powers that be in London haven`t been given official info about it. Things are continuing as normal as far as flights are concerned.

I don't know how it's promulgated beyond VAAC but the emails I have in my inbox suggest CAA/NATS are fully aware of the issues are known in fact, CAA are a part of VAAC so if they are not promulgating anything out......

The' ash cloud' was a very unusual type of eruption due to the very fine ash,it normally settles out in hours or a day or two at most .
