if you are just planning on staying in sharm and doing local excursions then you dont need to get a visa. they try to get you to pay for it on entry into egypt but you can ignore the queue and go straight through to passport control. You do however need one if you are planning any of the long trips outside of sharm i.e. luxor or cairo

As J-J indicates, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website is an excellent source of information.
For a 'belt & braces' way of seeking information about entry requirements though, I also like to consult the the appropriate website of the relevant national government (which could be their official tourist office or, more usually, their embassy or consulate). In this case, the website of Egyptian consulate in London states:
"Nationals from UK, EU and USA travelling to Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba resorts ONLY, for a maximum of 14 DAYS, do not require a visa prior to travelling as a free entry permission stamp will be granted upon arrival. If they intend to travel outside of the above mentioned areas they MUST obtain a Visa"

You do not need a visa for Sharm anymore. You still continue to need one for Hurghada.
I've just returned from my first trip to Egypt since the mid-90s, and the biggest, most significant change in the intervening years is the fact that the Russians have taken over en masse.
I like to meet other nationalities on holiday, but I have to say if I never meet a Russian again, it will be too soon; they are without a single shadow of a doubt the rudest, most obnoxious people it has ever been my misfortune to meet.
