My old vacuum cleaner has given up the goat and doesn't pick anything up anymore, so I've decided to invest in a Dyson but not sure which one. There's a few on offer at the moment for like Tescos have one for 139.99 http://www.tesco.com/electrical/product.aspx?R=8289550&bci=4294967210|Dyson but should I go for the cheapest or not, ie. which is the best one to get and why?

Have a look at others. I've just replaced a dyson with a SEBO upright vacuum cleaner and it is a far superior machine. OK it uses bags but the whole build quality is better.

Avoid Dyson like the plague. Worst purchase I ever made. I should have looked at http://www.reviewcentre.com/search.html?search_cat=6&searchstring=dyson first!

I don't know how Dyson get around Trading Standards with their TV advert that claims "never loses suction". The only answer must be "but neither does any other vacuum cleaner", i.e., The dirt collector may be full, the hose may be blocked, the filter may be choked, and nothing's being picked up - but that motor's still sucking away, folks !!" Mine stopped picking up anything within 5 minutes from new with a blocked filter, through trying to clean up plaster dust. Should have read the instructions that say not to do anything like that. WHAT?? my mum's 55 year old Electrolux cylinder model could have handled that! Use the hose to clean up to 13 steps on your stairway? Sure, if you have a tug-of-war team at each end, one team hauling on the hose, the other weighing down the vacuum cleaner. Otherwise it'll fall over, and follow you up the stairs by about the 5th step. No - we paid a lot of money for it, it drove the wife to tears, and we used it about 3 times before stowing it away for good. Heavy, awkward to try and lift, fiddly bits all over it. Dyson must have got his design awards from people who never used a vacuum cleaner in their lives, especially his. Please don't be conned by all the hype.

Ok so if not Dyson, which vacuum cleaner?

Which SEBO ACB312? Will it pick up cats hairs that are ingrained in a cheap awful carpet (that's like velcro)?

NB. We do intend to replace the velcro carpet but not for a few months and the carpet is looking more like our cat than our cat!!

We had a Dyson .Absolutely useless. Not with the suction but the fact that it was so cumbersome and cleaning stairs was like doing a marathon. Also emptying the thing meant most of the dirt ending back up on the floor unless you were extremely good at contortions involving a plastic bag.It now resides in the loft ..just in case.. and we have a Miele Cat and Dog ...brilliant.

Miele cat and dog - had a look but it's one of those that you pull along the floor. Aren't they harder to vac with then the uprights? Cos, like you're bent over pulling and pushing the hose thing instead of just pushing a hoover? I've never used one but they look like they'd be harder work???
Depends flipflop! I found the Dyson really cumbersome.Ours was the upright model.it never cleaned right up to the edges .
I do suffer with arthritis and it was far too heavy for me. The Cat and Dog is much easier ..for me anyway...there is no bending over .... it has a long extendable pusher thingy and an extra long lead and it isn't at all heavy to operate All the tools are on board so to speak whereas with the Dyson you had to cart them around with you in another plastic bag !
It's a matter of personal preference really and whatever makes life easier for you.
I am really pleased with it and my brother bought one and he loves it.It deals with dog hair really well and is good on hard floors and carpets.
Hope you find something you like..Happy Hoovering !!
Another Cat & Dog lover here.I'd always had an upright before & was dubious about getting it,but it's excellent.I'm very small & not strong[I have arthritis in my hands]but I get no problems with it.
sorry guys i have to stick up for Dyson i have that one flipflop and its great had it for about 4 years and its suction is great yes it is a problem doing the stairs but i just get one of the kids to hold it for the top 3. its easy to empty and i have to empty it atleast once a week but i do have three kids and it means it is doinging its job. I would recommened it to anyone
Obviously, Dyson is good for some, but it appears, the majority of posts are anti, and i'm afraid we are with them, it was the most expensive mistake for a hoover we made, years ago, we had Kirby, if you can afford another mortgage, they're worth it, but we now have a Miele, a better machine you'd have to look far for.
Disagree,we have a dyson animal dc14,its a bl***y godsend does EXACTLY what we want BRILLIANT!!

I have a Dyson Animal as well. It's OK but very heavy (I find it too difficult to carry up the stairs) and, I must admit, not very well made. My engineering son is totally unimpressed with the quality and the bad fit of the seels. Difficult to use on the stairs as well.

I prefer an upright cleaner. Am not in a hurry to replace the Dyson as at least it does get rid of the animal hairs, but won't buy another one. Do Miele do an upright?

I like Shaneystar2's "contortions with the plastic bag", always good for a laugh.
The SEBO I've got is Automatic X1.1. Tackles dog and cat hairs no problem. Local shop has been selling them for five years and he said he hasn't had a single problem. Downside is bags are not the cheapest.

Thanx people - think I'll be looking at a Miele or SEBO then.
with 8 cats 2 dogs and 5 adults also a horse whos rugs come indoors to be washed so plenty of hairs from him as well i wouldnt swap my dyson i have got both an upright and a cylinder one the upright is the best
We have had the discussion on here many times about Dysons and usually most people say they would never buy one again, including me. Miele every time I would say !
My Mum's got a SEBO upright cleaner (as has my sister), which she loves, and I'm always borrowing. It's absolutely brilliant, and I'm going to buy my own one one day!
We have Dyson Animal (DC14 I think) and Miele cat and dog. I would recommend the Miele as it is so much easier - you are not really bending over as the cleaner bit can be extended and you can get under things quite easily without having to move them. Picks up very well. Be aware though you have to buy bags for it, which are quite small and can fill up quite quickly depending on what you are vacuuming. The Dyson does pick up well and doesn't have a bag, but it is very cumbersome, heavy and does not get up to the edges very well, leading to the need to get the hose bit out anyway.

Like ACB312 - We have got a SEBO Turbo Upright X1.1. It is made in Germany, is quite expensive, but well worth it. It is absolutely fantastic & after having several other vac cleaners over the years, we wouldn't buy anything else now.

As Wispy68 has said, she's always borrowing it, even though they have their own Henry!

Here's another AB link.
