Are there any - Attending the Hairdresser- beginner classes about?

No matter how often I go I still cannot grasp the lingo! I seem unable to describe what i want, unable to get any ideas from them and at a loss as to how to answer their questions! Choppy? Full bang or whispy? Jooge .

I have grown my hair out this time and made a long awaited appointment in the hope of a slight change. I know, i should have taken a picture, but I cannot pretend to look like a glamour model! What happened? Mediocre cut, much like last time but this time its left me feeling frumpy. Grrrrr

This would help me too. I avoid hairdressers as its a way of life and language that's completely alien. I know I'll have to go again. Last went in March this year. I just want neat air that will stay in a certain direction without too much fuss, and inevitably come out looking like father ted in drag.

I've taken photos to hairdressers before - the last one was of Helena Christensen when she had short hair. It doesn't work out as you'd hoped.
I don't know about the language they use. I usually say how long I'd like it and whether flat or bit of body, straight but not poker straight.

It might help if you've a few stock answers prepared to questions like. 'Have you been anywhere nice on holiday?', and 'Are you going anywhere nice on holiday?'

SandyRoe, you're so right. I can't bear that small talk. The other one is "Are you going out tonight?". The answer is always No. I don't know why they bother. I'd like to have some peace.

Lets hope a hair wash this morning will help! Sometimes is the blow dry that I loathe. She meant well but when I said scrunchy and messy, I didn't mean half an hour of sleek rounded brush styling that all flops out on the way home!

LOL i'm never going out either! And if I was it would't be a hair cut day as it would need washing afterwards!

Maydup, just say you want tobe able to finger dry it and ask them to show you how to do it.

You tell the stylist what you want. Stylist assess your hair to see if your request is achievable & how she can satisfy you. All prof terminology is explainable. Hairdryers create volume (height) for fine hair. Scrunchy on curly hair needs drying with a diffuser (wide head impliment fixed to dryer).

whenever I need a new hairdresser, I hunt around till I find one where I think the people who work there look nice, They have probably got nicer hair than me but I want to like what I see. I then try and tell them what I want it to end up like rather than what I want done. With a new stylist I expect it to take a couple of visits before I completely get what I want and I make sure that I tell them what I liked about the last visit and what wasn't quite right. I don't worry too much about the blow dry but I am obsessive about having it cut how I want it. I make no attempt at all to use their language because its too easy to get it wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I don't end up with a showstopping hairstyle because I haven't got showstopping hair. I do end up with what i want though.

Maybe my problem is not really knowing what I want ..... and when they ask me if I want a few layers in this section or to chop into it here or there, i've no idea whether I do or not. Expecting too much I think and hoping they will help me with those decisions.

Go to a different hairdressers. Most salons these days seem to employ kids whose only knowledge seems to be about Justin Beiber, the latest Kardashian trivia or the X factor.

Layers are different lengths, ie if hair is one length styling is heavy on base line. If layered hair weight is dispersed, giving body to style. Choppy is a casual style.

so maybe you need to decide what it is you want more generally...look younger, more sophisticated? easycare? The nice thing about hair is that it grows again..if you don't like it this time, try again next time.
