Seagate Ext H/drive

Just got round to installing the above unit,but my PC doesn't recognise it.It's as though it isn't there.I'm using Windows Vista.AS USUAL any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Thanks fender 62,but I had already done it using that method with no success I'm afraid.

Have you looked at "Disc Management"?

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disc Management.

Your new disc should show up on there and you can right-click and initialise it then create a simple volume.

Hi bhg 481,isn't that basically the same as the method fender 62 suggested or am I missing something?It shows up in the disc management but I can't "open it up" Thanks,any further answers would be appreciated

No, it's not the same. Fender's link only applies after the disc has been initialised.

If you can see the disc in "Disc Management", right-click on it and "initialise".

You can then format it and assign a drive letter.

Is there any need to format a brand new disc with nothing on it?

The answer to that is 'it depends!', most are supplied formatted but some aren't, there isn't any chance you've bought a Mac formatted drive? Since it's brand new formatting it isn't going to do any harm

My EHD shows up in disc management but not in Control panel>progs. and features.I can't find any dropdown lists to be able to put a shortcut icon onto the screen.Surely adding a new unit shouldn't be all this trouble?

If you can see it in Disc Management, then see my post at 18:45.

It isn't a program. It never will appear in Progs.

Thanks bhg481 and all you good AB'ers,I got there in the end,it was not seeing it in progs that threw me.Also not seeing a "shortcut" icon available on the dropdown list.But it cropped up in the end.
