Among or amongst are the least of the linguistic problemettes in Auld Scotia. Here a cloak can add a certain something to a gentleman or used to tell the time.

Once again, thanks jno.

On the same sort of subject, what about the pronunciation of the word either? I tend to say eyether, rather then eether, but which is most correct ?

I have just thought of a word that the Yanks use that we used to but don't any longer. When we jump into a swimming pool, we save we have dived in but the Yanks say dove in. According to Bryson in his very interesting book,
"Made in America" we used to say dove as well but don't anymore, whereas on the other side of the Atlantic, they still do.

What an interesting language English !

But isn't Dove a brand of soap? ☺
Only when its pronounced as DUV sandy !
Funnily enough among is the original word in Old English and amongst a later version.
I agree with mikey...thanks jno...interesting link,...I've bookmarked it.

Mikey, I've been saying eyether/eether out loud..(I'm alone in house, lol)+ I've come to conclusion that I use both!

Yes, English IS a fascinating language,....whenever I read or hear "dove" it makes me wince,.....similarly "pled", as opposed to "pleaded". That could be connected to watching too much Judge Judy ;)

Bathsheba...PLED ? Are you sure ?

My goodness, I have never heard that one but its sounds much worse than dove !
@mikey....yep,.....as sure as I'm riding this camel ;)

Just find Judge Judy,.....she's all over the TV on various channels......it's used quite often!

bleed>bled; plead>pled. So it's not exactly illogical, it's irregular (in the linguistic sense) but not unique.
...just seen douglas' post at 12.30.......*giggles at Scottish timepiece*......:D

Bathsheba...thanks but I don't watch Judge Judy type programs and I can honestly say that I have never come across PLED before, nor will I ever use it the ghastly word !
Ta, Sandy. :-)
