I was shocked to read the orginal report of this woman trolling the McCanns and am doubly shocked by this news report

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2781377/BREAKING-NEWS-Internet-troll-targeted-McCanns-dead-hotel-room-days-fleeing-home.html

I cannot begin to understand what motivates some seemingly 'decent' people to become internet trolls but it seems the shame is too much to bear in this case.

Ellipsis Who am I defending? Certainly not the poor woman who the press hounded possibly to her death. She was mentally ill and needed Compassion I do not defend her actions with regard to the McCanns as they are indefensible.
divebuddy you have hit the nail on the head, anyone who does not agree with you ,well, their thought processes must be warped. How very astute of you.
//I was always under the impression that 'Trolling' was adding a contribution to a thread for the sole purpose of causing trouble or confrontation. Now it seems to be used to describe anyone on a thread who has an opposing or contravertial view to oneself. //

It is starting to look like that retrochic.
hc4361 - "This whole thing has made me consider other cases of outing 'baddies' on the tv and I must admit I am uncomfortable with the whole concept.
Programmes like Cowboy Builders and Rogue Traders make for cheap tv but are they really fair? We don't really get to hear the other side of the story."

I'm inclined to agree, at least in principle.

I have always believed, and stated on here many times, that appealing to some peoples' over-developed sense of self-righteousness is a seriously dangerous path to take.

divebuddy, I think I'd run if Dom Littlewood and the television crew jumped on me unexpectedly!

Sometimes the builder does give plausible reasons, such as the client kept changing the plan/design/materials or the client failed to pay the agreed monies.

// I think they are usually on very safe ground with cowboy builders. //

Very safe. They need to have a long track record of ripping people off.

I think Trading Standards need more bite.

This shows another side to the story, and makes for interesting reading:

Thanks for that link. After 20 minutes of reading the archived timeline, I was surprised to find I'd only got back as far as mid September and there's reams more. Even so there were some remarkable allegations being made and one or two famous name toes being treaded on.
I am intrigued by the fact that she claimed to know Praia de Luz well, at one point disputing claims by another Twitter user that it was a hotbed of vice.

She repeatedly refers to defenders of the McCanns as "Shills" and, in accordance with the standard definition, she was Trolling the "Shills". The McCanns claim to not use Twitter so, unless logging on under guise of a username, they are unable to monitor the (hashtag)mccann debate/timeline and thus the Trolling cannot be said to be aimed -directly- at them.
Nevertheless, if it's defamatory, in print and about you then it is still actionable… once you have a name and address, that is.
