How can I restore my email bar to see if I have any 'new emails' or 'No new messages'? on my Toshiba lap top

When I open my computer to access my emails on the bottom bar are several options but for some strange reason it it does not come up with say for example'No new massages' or 1 2 and so on new messages. Hope this makes sense.Still many thanks for your time
