Went to the cinema this afternoon to see Mr Turner. Will have to spend a few days thinking before I decide whether I liked it or not. Has anyone else seen it and if so, what did you think?

my sister went to see it and thought it was rubbish. Wont be going to see it myself.
There are some very mixed 'general public' reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (despite rave reviews from most professional reviewers):

. . . but at least Maydup enjoyed it! (Scroll down this page).

Since Turner is my favourite British artist, I might get round to watching it one day. However it's nearly 20 years since I last went to the cinema, so I'll probably wait until it's on TV.

Thanks for the link Buenchico. Agree with a lot of what has been said. Guess it's a "love it or hate it" kind of film - and very long!
Saw it last night. It was far far far far too long.
I was baffled by the way it started - the beginning seemed to make no sense at all - why start at that point in his life with no explanation of what went before ? Turner seemed a much more boorish and selfish personality than I had imagined, but I suppose the writers' research must have discovered that this was true. But the film did rather emphasise his worst characteristics. I am not sorry I went to see it, but if it ever turns up on television I shall avoid it.
I saw it last week and loved every minute of Mr Turner. It was beautifully filmed, well acted and a very accurate interpretation of his life. Timothy Spall gave an especially fine performance as the grumpy and unpleasant but extremely talented artist. I felt vey close to the character and his love of the sea. I felt his concern about the coming of the railways and the potential loss of his beloved steam ships. I loved the romantic atmosphere of the painters competing at the Royal Academy each year and again Turners concern about the influence photography would have on their profession. But most of all I loved Mrs Booth and her dear little cottage on the harbour arm. I'd see it all over again in a flash.
Was his love for sketching pornographic scenes revealed in the film?
who'da guessed that there'd be a thread in the Film topic http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Media-and-TV/Film/Question1378400.html
