IP address
10 Answers
is there any way legally or illegally (i dont need to know how its done but if its possible) i can get hold of someones IP address. i have been sent threatening e-mails, i just want to find out where its coming from. i heard through an IP address i can find out exactly which house and computer the mails are coming from. can i find out someones IP address just solely through an e-mail that they have sent me. i dont wish to get the police involved as they have better things to deal with, im not scared but just want to knw where and why its coming/from.

You need to look at the email headers and get the originating IP address from that.
Look through old email and examine the headers to see if you can find the same address. Using the 'find' search is a big help.
Report abusive and threatening email to the postmaster of the email service that it came from. eg
[email protected]
[email protected]
and so on.

You can use this - http://www.ip-adress.com/trace_email/
It traces where the email came from, but probably not from who it came from.

Finding the IP address will not tell you how to find the senders actual home address - you are wasting your time trying that route.
It is pretty much impossible to draw any direct correlation between an IP address and a real-world physical geographic location (house or street or district). They are not connected.
IF you have threatening emails then report them to the post master of the emailer. Look at the bit after the "@" sign and send an email to "postmaster@" that domain/ISP/mail service.
If they are coming from a dedicated domain (i.e. [email protected]) then a whois lookup of the domain name might give you some info about the owner/registrant, but not much if registered via an agent or 3rd party. Google "whois" for more info.
