I'm Back ......to Reading Books Again ;)

I've decided to while away the short, drab wintry days by resurrecting an old pleasure...reading.

I'd love recommendations.

I have read all Maeve Binchy and Marian Keyes (apart from her new one) , that kinda gives an indication of the type I like.

I also don't mind true stories/autobiographies.

I struggle with books where I have to use my imagination..in any form.

I'd be ever so grateful to hear of any books you'd recommend :)

I recently discovered a series of books that I can't get enough of - they're written by a dog called Chet who solves crimes for his master Bernie. Sounds weird but very funny and cleverly written. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hossenei - can't recommend this book enough.

Anything by Lynwood Barclay if you like a damn fine thriller !

Anita Shreve books are enjoyable, it can be hard going at first because she often writes in the first person. Try and read the earlier ones chronologically as there is a thread running through them.
I've just finished Ken Follett's Century trilogy and once you ignore it reading like the Grauniand it's good.

Don't read Martina Cole. They're all exactly the same. If you 've read one, you've read them all.
Bill Bryson books are great if you like a laugh.

Try Victoria Hislop. I was persuaded by a friend although I didn't fancy them, but I think hr books are good. Try The Island.

Totally agree with janbee. I really hate Martina Cole, can't stand the pseudo cockney and swearing

But I love Victoria Hislop. The Return was my favourite. And Ken Follet. All of his books are enjoyable.

Yasmin's Khadra. Very interesting novels about current situations in Islamic countries, although The Attack was set in Israel

No one has mentioned Mo Hayder, love her books, thrillers at their best

And if anyone wants something a little bit different, thrillers mainly set in modern day Japan as well as around the world, check out Barry Eisler, but you should read them in sequence.

If you like historical fiction, you can' beat the late Jean Plaidy.
