My first laptop, purchased in 2008, came with Windows Vista installed. It's the only programme I've ever used but I understand that it's not well regarded by computer buffs. I now want to replace my computer and have been advised to wait before doing so until Windows 9 is launched. Can any ABer please advise as to when this is likely to be. Many thanks

You'll have a damned long wait for Windows 9 because Microsoft have deliberately distanced themselves from the troubled Windows 8 by announcing that it will be followed by Windows 10, which will be available towards the end of next year:...

This is no Windows 9, the next release will be Windows 10.

It is likely be next summer but it is widely expected that there will be a free upgrade for those who have Windows 8 or Windows 8.1

I like W8, so it's up to you

In the meantime I'd question whether you really need Windows 10 (or, indeed, Windows 8). I'm typing this on my 'new' (= 'refurbished') computer which I purchased a week ago, with the excellent Windows 7 Profesional on it. It's certainly good enough for me.
I also like Windows 8.1, it took a bit of getting used to but then so did Vista after XP, and then 7 after Vista.
Indeed, every new edition has a new set of annoyances to try to overcome or put up with. Has to be that way or folk will not realise anything has changed, and see the lack of need to have upgraded. The last few updates I've had, it's difficult to recall anything I really wanted from them that was different. Plenty of stuff to stress me out though. Some I never found out how to stop until years on.
Nothing really so wrong with Windows 8.1 that it would justify waiting for Windows 10 to be honest.
Windows 10 probably so called to avoid confusion with Windows 9x which is what earlier versions of Windows 95/98 were sometimes referred to as
