Damsel in distress here, so hope someone can assist.
I already have a DVD/Freeview box connected to the TV which works fine.
I have a VCR which I am also trying to connect . The only sockets on the back of the VCR are red/white, and a 21-pin scart socket . I have tried connecting VCR to the DVD box via scart with no success. Then tried connecting VCR direct to TV . No joy there. I've watched so many "how to" videos, mostly American, and one guy even said I had to get on the roof. I don't have cable TV.
Can anyone give "easy to follow" instructions as this is driving me nuts. Thanks

Andelia: I take it you've tried taking the scart cable out of the back of the freeview box and putting that into the VCR?
You know the cable to the freeview/dvd works so using that cable will then rule out it being a cable fault or not.
You asked about your aerial.

It needs to go into the Freeview box.

You also say dvd - is that a dvd recorder?

@bhg481. That sounds like a good suggestion. Will swap leads over. Meanwhile, taking a paracetamol. lol. @Dizmo, maybe it's me who's knackered!
If your dvd is not a recorder and you want to be able to record freeview, then you need a connection from freeview to video - but we can help with that once you have both working with the tv.
Question Author
@Tuvok The DVD Recorder is a Panasonic Model DMR-ES20DEB which also combines Freeview.
Ok so no need to add recording to video.

I am off to swap leads and will return to let you know the result. You are all so patient.....:)

That will have to wait until tomorrow morning, as I have been called to go out. Enjoy the rest of the evening all of you. I hope to report success tomorrow.

I have borrowed a scart lead and connected TV to VCR (AV1 sockets on both ) and pressed the source button to ensure correct channel showing on TV as AV1
Result is I still have sound but no picture. Maybe the VCR is the fault
The only option I can think of that you haven't tried is to connect the VCR to the SCART on the TV that the DVD box is currently connected to.
I think we've proved that the SCART lead isn't at fault with all the suggestions we've had you try. If this last option doesn't work it looks like a problem with your VCR. If that's the case and you have some old tapes you want to play back then I suggest you go to a charity shop - we have a big BHF shop in Reading, as do many large towns, which sells furniture etc and has lots of VCRs.

hi bhg481
I have now tried all combinations with the good scart lead.
i.e. When I connect TV AV1 or AV2 to Freeview box both work fine. But when I use the same lead to connect TV AV1 or AV2 to VCR, neither work (sound but no picture) Thanks for the tip on charity shops. I am now looking into trying to connect the VCR to my laptop, as a last resort

Success at last! The problem was with the instructions shown in the VCR manual. The VCR was bought in 1995 way before our digital TV and so the instruction for the scart connection into VCR socket "A" was for analog . As we are now digital, the correct connection is in now in socket "B". Thanks again for all help received
Well done Andelia but I'm confused now. The analogue/digital only applies to the tuner; the SCART connections should be independent of that.
However, you're working now. Great.
I forgot to say - thanks for bringing us up-to-date. Not everyone bothers.

You're confusing me niw bhg481 ;) As long as it works eh? Merry Christmas

My neighbour tried every other socket in every possible combination and this was the only one that solved the problem. Somewhere, among all the 100 pages of extra instructions, he found the analog/digital notes. :)
