There's a thought Margo... just kill off all the poor souls that sort through the waste at the recycle center. On the bright side, it would eliminate any problem with the homeless folks pushing their carts through the city rummaging through bins, no?
When I've scraped all I can from the silly shaped marmite jar, I save the dregs, ready to add to the next gravy mix, once disolved in a little warm water.
It's also a good n' cheap way of getting a fermentation started with home made wines and beers.
I acquired a taste for vegemite many years ago in Australia - largely because what was sold there as 'marmite' was absolutely revolting compared to the real stuff here.
Quite happy now with the genuine version of either
Marmite every time - my mother used to do a lovely hard boiled egg and marmite sandwich filling - I've tried making it, but can never get it as good as hers. Marmite on hot buttered toasted is one of my favourite snacks whatever time of day. I've tried vegemite and bovril, and neither come close, in my opinion.
