We have adopted a 5 year old Jack Russell dog.He shreds the post and newspapers or tries to when they come through the letterbox.Any ideas about how to stop him? Many thanks.
1 Fit a container behind the letter-box so he can't get to the post. 2 Keep him away from the front door. 3 Do what we are going to do and get an outside box to receive the post. I'm assuming that the post arrives when you aren't there to control him.
outside box deffo. Those mesh boxes that hang over the letter slit on the inside of the door can be dangerous to a determined dog who can get claws or teeth caught in the mesh
our dear old Lab used to pick up the paper when the guy collected the milk churns and carry it up for me every morning ...our next Lab, while living in suburbia, used to collect papers from everyone around us and bring them home ... fun for us to return them !!
does your jr perhaps see them as an intruder and a threat to you so he's heading them off at the pass ??
My friend has a JR and she does the same. Maybe it's JR thing? Certainly most dogs are quite calm about things but terriers can have "attitude" when any sort of "intruder" comes to visit, even through a letterbox. Good luck Racoony. I would also suggest an outside mail box. A nuisance I know but... By the way, I know JRs get a lot of bad reviews but I LOVE them. They're feisty little devils.
Our 101% terrier of various sorts (and there has got to be a lot of Jack Russell in there - we are wondering if we can afford a DNA test) is very defensive of uninvited intruders into 'his' domain and that includes post. When introduced to callers he is fine and fawns all over them - but woe betide if they enter uninvited....
Quite a contrast to my dear old lab. - who also brought the paper etc..
You could either get a tray/basket (or mesh) as advised or trained your JR to stop ripping your post to bits. Try spraying dog repellent on a few envelopes then posting them yourself - it might stop your dog it its tracks.
