It has been said here on AB that not enough prosecutions are being made for FGM in Britain, so lets hope that this is the first on many. ( many prosecutions, that is, not FGMs )

Absolutely. It's a barbaric and disgusting practice that has no place in a civilised society. Doctors doing it should be struck off aside from any punishment the court imposes.

237SJ, there are different types of FGM. The most extensive removes the inner and outer labia as well as the clitoris, sewing up the vulva.

according to the papers, he resutured the labia
and in fact he could have apposed the raw edges of each labium with absorbable sutures, which would have given the normal number of unfused labia ( to wit .... two )

clearly if bits have been lopped off then they cant be restored .....

According to the Guardian he sewed the vaginal opening back up.

This was a Junior Obstetric Registrar who faced with two raw edged skin wounds, sewed them together as ONE instead of sewing the two edges together separately making TWO.

Did he do this with malice of thought or was this a decision he made on the spur of the moment?

I hope this young surgeon does not have his career ruined in order to satisfy a topical, almost Political point, albeit gross, unnecessary and barbaric to the majority.

yes sqad I can guarantee that when you were doing obs as a midder student you were not allowed to sew the labia together when repairing an episiotomy ....

PP.....as far as i know, this patient didn't have an episiotomy and if she had, then it would have been sen up separately.......leaving the FGM to be sutured on some manner.

The "manner" seems to be at the centre of this case.

the papers carry an account that the womans partner is a co defendant for egging him on ....

the consultant was informed after the fact and gave an opinion that they had better leave it as it had been done .....

The midwife immediately raised concerns that what had been done was unlawful

That is nonsense, it is just the Consultant wriggling out of this to leave the Junior doctor to "carry the can."

as he knew nothing
