Is your local town or village pronounced completely differently to how it is spelt? There are plenty of them like that in the U.K.
The town Wymondham in Norfolk comes to mind, pronounced Why-mun-dumb.
I don't know what you call something that is smaller than a hamlet (3 farms and that is it) but a friend of mine lives there and has a small caravan park on his farm. The place-that-is-smaller-than-a hamlet is called Tranmire and the sign on the main road says Tranmire Only.
All the tourists seem to think that the name of the place is Tranmire Only!
We went to Cornwall for many years and often spent a day in Fowey. We always referred to it as Fowey (FOW to rhyme with 'cow', plus WEE) until we realised it should be pronounced FOY
Wasn't sure how to send you information so hope this works !
