however the chinese routinely think we vandalised the Summer Palace in 1854 -we ( united forces ) thought we were specifically punishing the Emperor for being a bad boy. - now recognised the westerners did NOT understand the function of Emperor in chinese society

The Japanese couldnt work out where the Americans had got their information from and concluded it was from POWs. So the order had gone out to massacre them in Sept 1945.
They only realised the diplomatic code and the main naval code JN 25 was read, when they were told. They had previously thought the Americans and British wouldnt bother
So those lives were saved for a start
