When viewed through the video channel, the picture quality is significantly reduced. The reception is fine through terrestrial TV and Sky satellite. The video is otherwise fine ie. plays and records. All cable connections are fine and tight. Can anyone shed any light on the problem?

I had this but the video was connected to the TV via a RF co-ax cable. I changed it to a SCART cable and the picture was perfect.
If you live in an area with a very good strong signal, it is possible that the signal is over amplified, as the video amplifies the signal and then the tv does as well. Try using the Scart connection first, as already suggested.
