but the BBC have history in that department.
do those of you that say it should have been hushed up believe the BBC could morally do that again? //
There is a big difference between dealing with a matter internally, and 'hushing it up'.
had Clarkson not been such a high profile figure, with history in the area of bad behaviour, it probably would have been dealt with as an internal disciplinary matter. Because the media, and therefore the public, to whom the BBC is responsible, became aware, they had to be seen to be following correct procedures.
I think it would be a million miles away from a cover-up if no-one outside the BBC heard about it.

I'm sorry I have not read through the whole thread.
May and Hammond's contracts are up for renewal. It would be perfectly easy for them and Clarkson to produce their own show and keep most of the money for themselves instead of it being a cash cow for the BBC.
Without the trio, Top Gear as a brand will wither. Another show with the trio might not reach the same number of viewers, but would reach enough for them to make tons of money.

I decided to read this thread before answering. I sort of wish I hadn't.
DTC, how would or should it have been handled differently? A man smacked his work colleague in the face so hard it split his lip open. What outcome would you have hoped for behind closed doors to this act?
Which brings me to Bazwillrun. Is it alright if I come round and punch you in the face? Of course it is, happens all the time.
His lip was bust wide open by a man a good 7 inches taller and broader than him. A pathetic act.
Also, envy? Please. Why would I want to emulate a boorish 4rs3 like that? They are ten a penny, money or no money.
