For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.The rules of precedence were referred, in my schooldays (circa 25 years ago) as BODMAS, which stood for "brackets of division, multiplication, addition, subtraction." These rules meant, despite the "brackets" bit, that the operations took precedence in that order, UNLESS brackets had been used to indicate otherwise. So, in the second line of the above problem, the multiplication 3 x 3 should be done first, such that the answer for that line should be 15. If one wanted to change the order of precedence, one has to use brackets, such that the operation(s) inside the brackets is/are perfomed first.
And the pub sounds like a good idea!
I didn't see what the TV show had as the "answer", but the pedant inside me is screaming the answer "47!" Since there are only six "numbers" i.e. 3,3,3,3,20 and 15. And we are asked to add those numbers. i.e ignore the arithmetic operations above and do what the last line asks.
I'm sure that won't be the "right" answer, though.
Mine's a pint of creme de menthe.
