Tried that tilly. The mats still gets black marks on it after about a week of use.
Frequently........once a week.
Several threads suggest that, if you've bought the type of mats that seem to attract mildew, there's not much you can do about it.

However there seem to be some mats, which are specifically designed to prevent the build-up of mildew, which are well-reviewed. e.g:

Thanks for your answers. I'll get the Mrs to have a look-see at the resistant mats
Alternatively, hang it to dry after each use. I pick mine up and stick it on the tiles inside the shower cubicle.
I USE MY STEAMER
Question Author
I'll give the STEAMER a go at the weekend.
As said before...hang it up to dry.
I've had mine for 6 months now, not a mark on it.
Can only be because I hang it out to dry after use.
I agree with hanging it up to dry, but only after you've given it a rinse with clear water, I think soapy residue makes mildew worse. Some mats are better than others and the best I've found are the ones from Sainsburys for £5.
what did victor do on it ?
What I do to reduce mildew, is after my daily shower, turn the mat over and give it a good blast with the shower head, then a quick spray with a anti bacterial bathroom cleaner, slap it on the wall tiles to let it drain down into the bath.
It only takes a couple of minutes and it keeps it pretty clean.
All we do with ours is rinse it off with the shower head and then stick it on the tiles to dry. We've never, ever had any mould problems.
Wash them on a HOT wash. I wash mine every time I do a 'towel' wash. Approx 3 times a week. No mould.
Apparently, soaking them in sterilising fluid, like you'd use on baby bottles, will get rid of mildew on shower curtains, so I imagine it would work on mats too. Milton is good.
